An Open Letter to the Catholic Bishops of Illinois

Communication = Dialogue

On June 1, 2011 Civil Unions came into effect for the state of Illinois. As a result of this some among you have opted to either remove yourselves from the Illinois Adoption/Foster Care Program.  Choosing rather to close down some Catholic adoption and foster care programs in the state, those who have taken this course of action have not put the best interest of the child first.

Instead of engaging the passage of legislation such as SB1123 which was defeated you could have taken the road of direct dialogue with those whose minds and hearts you wish to change. Instead you went to the courts, and media to promote your agenda. In our opinion this was not a prudent course of action.

I have reached out privately to some among you only to be met with a dismissive attitude. As many of you  know we are an international organization of Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Catholics. Our two goals are to attempt to facilitate first communication, and then serious dialogue.

Our first priority is with the children that will be affected by your actions. I am sending this open letter in the hopes that a pathway of dialogue can be brokered which will respect the differences of opinion, and not attack them.  I have attempted private communication but to no avail prudence dictates that I now write this open letter.

If you wish to communicate with us we can be reached at sashmovement@aol.com.

Sincerely,

Joe Murray
